Who We AreWe are a small retail nursery located in the village on Lopez Island, the first stop on the San Juan Ferry run. Islandscape Nursery and Garden Center is independently owned and operated by Brett and Patty Stewart, their faithful cat Topaz (adopted from previous owners), and our small but diligent staff. In the past 5 years we have transformed a dying nursery into an inspiring and interesting place to purchase and learn about plants that thrive in our climate. Customers constantly comment on the healthy condition of our plants, the organization, selection, personal and knowledgeable service they receive at our nursery, and their pleasant surprise by our competitive prices. Increasingly, folks are catching on to our special order program, which means if we do not currently have the specific plants or items they’re looking for, we can usually have them by the following week, if it’s something we generally stock. Patty Stewart brings to this business 30 years of diverse horticultural knowledge. Aside from studying horticulture
and botany at University of Hawaii, she has years of practical experience, starting in her early teens under the watchful
eye of Cyrus Hyde at Well-Sweep Herb Farm in rural New Jersey, Brett Stewart is a man who can answer and usually fix any mechanical challenge thrown his way. Though mechanical engineering was his specialty in college, it’s obvious he was born with this helpful and amazing talent. His hard working and pleasant disposition pair irreplaceably in his role at the nursery. His love for plants is actually what brought him together with Patty. Brett is at the nursery during the peak season, but continues his exceptional work doing landscape/hardscape, drains, finish grading and other related projects as his schedule allows. Our philosophy at Islandscape is to enhance the beauty around us rather than alter it. We believe in working with the natural world through ground preparation, and choosing the appropriate plants and landscape for each person’s particular site and bringing their dreams to reality. We make every effort to inspire and educate through our own love and life with the plant world, and believe gardening should be a joy, not a burden. to growing organic garlic and field grown cut and dried
flowers on Lopez Island to managing the nursery at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai. After being accepted
to an international program in horticulture through Ohio State University, she worked in the propagation department
at Duncan and Davies for a year in New Zealand. Upon returning home to Lopez in 1992, she and Brett started a successful
landscape contracting business and in 2000 when the previous nursery went up from sale, it seemed an obvious direction
for the couple to move into.
