• All plants listed, with few exceptions, need good drainage and full
to part sun exposure for initial establishment. In locations with poorly drained
soil, burming is recommended.
• Most of our larger conifers are field grown (stock beds), best availability
is from November to April during digging season. Generally specimens are over
5’, are balled and burlapped (B&B). Smaller more common varieties
are often available through the entire season in pots. For plantings needing
more than 10 trees over 5’ tall, plan on ordering 1 year in advance to
ensure availability. Common varieties average between $10 to $10.50 per foot
of growth. Delivery to site is usually included (on Lopez, out areas delivery
charges will apply).
• On hole preparation, do not dig with backhoe or large equipment! Large
balled trees are very heavy and will sink below the soil line over time in
overly loosed soil, which in severe cases can cause death of the tree. The
hole should be no deeper than the ball and twice as wide. In most cases, the
trees should be staked for the first year and then the stake removed. Don’t
expect much growth the first season after planting, once established many of
the selections listed, under optimum conditions can put up to 2’ of growth
per year.
• Watering of the new tree is usually only necessary the first summer
after planting with exception to very sandy sites. Mulching after planting
is highly recommended to retain moisture and suppress weeds. Which compete
for water, nutrients and light. Water stress (too much or not enough) will
affect the tree’s rate of growth. Learn to pay attention to your plants’ needs!
• Deer and rabbits can be a problem in unfenced areas, deer especially
during the rutting season (August through November). Egg or blood based repellants
are very effective and are recommended for at least the first two seasons.
