In Memory of Topaz

(our beloved little pussy cat, that called our nursery in the village home.)

When Brett and I bought the nursery 10 years ago and agreed to adopting Topaz, there was no way of predicting what an important part of our life she would become. And is why, when our sweetest, little pussy cat came down with congestive heart failure in late June of this year, we were devastated. For her age (we estimated around 20 yrs. old ) she had been incredibly healthy, and a true joy to have at the nursery everyday. I’ve often said, “As many people come to see Topaz as they do to buy plants.” That little puss loved her nursery home, especially after we installed a cat door for her during our first year of renovating the building. She only left her home three times, once when we first adopted her for a full check up at Jerry’s (the vet.), the second time after she had her initial attack from the congestive heart failure. We took her home to nurse her back to health; she spent many hours staying cool under the artichoke leaves in our garden by day. At night we took turns sleeping on the floor with her for the next three weeks until she was ready to go back to her home at the nursery. Her third and most difficult would be her final (we knew this when we left the nursery with Topaz in my arms with no strength left to fight the ride in the car, which she despised.) After struggling for five months with congestive heart and old age, our sweet, little friend could not survive on love and drugs any longer and went to sleep forever on December 8, 2008. We are very thankful to have known such a special, little soul and one that had touched the hearts of so many that knew her. And for us to have shared so much of our lives with her, especially in her final hours. Without doubt, there have been many challenging times for us over the years at the nursery, and Brett and I often wondered why we made the decision in the first place. And as we said our final goodbyes to our furry, friend, it was clear, it was Topaz who needed us, to live out her life at the nursery, the place she had called home for so many years. The place her spirit will always remain, around every corner, under every bench, and in the hearts of all of us that knew her. In her peace, and in our sadness, we will have to cope with her absence at the nursery, though it will never be the same without her. Topaz, you were a gift to all of us and for that we are grateful. Goodbye my little friend, may we meet again.

And many thanks to you Jerry, and to everyone who has been so supportive through this most difficult of times. With sincere appreciation, Patty and Brett @ Islandscape
